Gujarat Congress MLAs will elect their Legislature Party leader today. Patidar MLA Paresh Dhanani has emerged the front-runner in the race. Being the largest opposition party, the new CLP leader would by default become the Leader of Opposition in the Gujarat Assembly. The Congress won 77 seats, 22 less than the BJP in the keenly contested polls.

The Madras HC is likely to hear disqualified MLA P Vetrivel’s anticipatory bail plea today. The bail plea relates to the case booked against him for having released a video footage of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa on December 20.

The Election Commission is likely to issue a notification for the bypolls to three Lok Sabha seats, in Rajasthan and West Bengal. The seats fell vacant following the demise of sitting members. The bypolls to the Alwar and Ajmer seats in Rajasthan and the Uluberia seat in West Bengal are to be held at the end of the month.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives and Social Democrats leaders will meet for crucial talks today. Merkel hopes to secure a fourth termin office by persuading the centre-left SPD to extend the “grand coalition” that ruled Germany for the past four years.

A sweeping reform of European Union financial markets will take effect today. The new rules, known as known as MiFID II or Markets in Financial Instruments Directive, come a year late due to its complexity and after eleventh-hour handholding by regulators keen to avoid any trading snarls.
