A 100 per cent jump in coal loading at New Mangalore boosted the freight loading of Palakkad division of Southern Railway during 2012-13.

A press release said here that the division loaded 7.068 million tonnes of freight during 2012-13 as against 5.344 million tonnes during 2011-2012, recording a growth of 32.26 per cent.

Of this, coal cargo contributed 5.414 million tonnes to the total freight loading during 2012-13. However, coal loading was at 2.627 million tonnes during 2011-12. With this, coal loading witnessed a growth of 106 per cent during 2012-13.

The total loading of cargo, including coal, from Panambur area in New Mangalore was 6.495 million tonnes. This contributed 91.9 per cent to the overall loading of the division.

The total earnings -- including freight, passenger and miscellaneous earnings -- of the division stood at Rs 878.46 crore for 2012-13 as against Rs 665.52 crore of the previous fiscal, recording an increase of 32 per cent.
