Gangavaram port in Andhra Pradesh has notched up a 20 per cent growth in cargo throughput last fiscal, thanks to increase in coal traffic.
The port handled 15.81 million tonnes of traffic last year against 13.01 million tonnes in the previous fiscal.
Its coal traffic increased to 11.32 million tonnes from 9.89 mt in the previous year, while iron ore traffic increased to 1.37 mt from 0.27 mt.
The port is in the process of expanding its capacity from the current 15 mt to 45 mt, involving addition of three multi-purpose berths and a coal handling terminal, which will be capable of handling vessels up to 200,000 DWT.
It also involves a massive dredging of about four million cub mts of silt, including rocks and sand trap, which is being executed by the state-owned Dredging Corporation of India.
The port will aim at increasing the share of non-coal cargoes such as fertilisers, bauxite and food grains after the expansion.
