Doctors at Global Hospitals here have successfully performed a laparoscopic surgery on a patient suffering from pancreatic cancer.

Under normal circumstances, an open whipples operation would have been performed to treat this kind of ailment. “But the patient being a male of 45 years and a strenuous worker by profession, we thought a total laparoscopic whipples operations will be beneficial and performed the same successfully,’’ Global Hospitals Group Managing Director K Ravindranath told newspersons here on Wednesday.

Vijaykumar C Bada, Senior Consultant, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Global Hospitals, who performed the surgery, said surgical procedure under laparoscopic method will benefit patients more than the open surgery method.

“While the cost of the procedure might be similar at about ₹3 lakh, there will be more savings in terms of post-operative care,’’ he said.

About 6 per cent of total cancers reported are pancreatic cancers. Though generally seen in patients above 60 years, it is increasingly being seen in people aged between 40 and 60 years also, he added.
