Water from Godavari river has been diverted from Tadepudi reservoir to facilitate supply to the Krishna river and later to the delta region.
This move is seen as a major step towards linking Godavari and Krishna rivers. About 600 cusecs of water from Godavari has been diverted to Krishna.
State Irrigation Minister D Uma Maheshwara Rao and senior leaders were present when the water was let into Krishna pathway through a canal.
The water entry has been greeted with cheers by the people and farmers gathered to witness the development.
The water is being evacuated from Tadepudi lift irrigation to be diverted for supply into Prakasham barrage. It will take a couple of days for the water to find its way to the barrage.
The State is working on Polavaram multi purpose project and the Pattiseema project to link Godavari and Krishna rivers.
While the Government expects to complete Polavaram by 2018-19, the Pattiseema project would be ready by March 2016.
Meanwhile, State reservoirs are getting copious inflows due to rains in catchment areas.
