The Centre has intervened to stabilise the Central Bureau of Investigation by appointing M Nageswar Rao as the interim Director, CBI.
Rao is presently the Joint Director, CBI. He is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1986 batch. He joined the CBI in 2016.
The top two officers of the CBI, present Director, CBI, Alok Verma and Special Director, CBI, Rakesh Asthana, have been sent on "compulsory leave" as the spat between the them reached the Delhi High Court on Monday.
Rao has embarked on a series of transfers immediately after taking charge. Deputy Superintendent of Police, CBI, New Delhi, A K Bassi has been transferred as Deputy Superintendent CBI, Anti-Corruption Bureau, Port Blair. Additional SP CBI, SS Gum has been transferred and posted as CBI, ACB, Jabalpur. Both were probing the case against Asthana. At least 11 officers of the CBI have been transferred to various positions.
All these orders have been issued in public interest according to the CBI.
