The Maharashtra Government has decided to press in its machinery for providing relief to over 1,300 tourists and pilgrims from the State marooned in Uttrakhand due to flash floods and landslides.

Chief Minister of Maharashtra Prithviraj Chavan on Wednesday, while addressing the media after the Cabinet meeting, said Rs 10 crore has been earmarked from the Chief Minister Relief Fund for carrying out the relief measures. A team of senior officials from the State Government has also been sent to Dehradun for co-ordinating the relief efforts, he said.

Out of the 1,353 tourists and pilgrims, officers have been able to establish contact with 1,019. Efforts are being made with the help of local administration to bring them back to safety. The State administration is in touch with officials of the Defence Ministry, National Disaster Management Force and the Uttrakhand Chief Minister Office, Chavan said.

Giving an overview of the relief efforts, Chavan added that 17 helicopters have been deployed for ferrying the tourists. Food and medicines are also being sent using helicopters, for which, four makeshift helipads have been created.
