Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda has met the Union Railway Minister, Piyush Goyal, and requested him to take up the construction of a new railway station at Hassan.
Deve Gowda, in a memorandum submitted to Goyal, said “At the time of gauge conversion of Mysore-Hassan section of South Western Railway, a new railway station was proposed at Hassan railway station considering the condition of the old station building and it being far away from the centre of the city and bus stand.”
As desired by the Railways, 24.28 acres of land was acquired for the construction of the above station. Railways has also made part payment to the State Government for 9.26 acres of this land. “I understand that the Railways has also sanctioned the construction of the new station at this location which is more convenient and accessible,” Gowda said.
However, the work could not be taken up due to a writ petition and stay obtained in the Karnataka High Court. The above writ petition has been dismissed by the High Court in 1999, and the Railways has been asked to expedite the above work. “I find that nothing concrete has been done by the Railway in this regard,” he added.
