All villages in Gujarat will now be connected by an optical fibre-based network .
The State Government on Friday announced the signing of a tripartite MoU with the Department of Telecommunications and Bharat Broadband Network Ltd in New Delhi to establish an optical fibre-based network that will provide broadband connectivity to all gram panchayats in the State. Under this project, all villages will be covered under the National Optical Fibre Network, an official said here.
Earlier, under the eGram Vishwagram Project, a total of 13,685 eGram centres were established in village panchayats. These were equipped with personal computers connected to the Internet via broadband through VSAT. The project helped provide e-services to rural citizens.
After setting up the optical fibre network, all villages of the State will turn into eVillages.
Chief Minister Narendra Modi had initiated the eGram Vishwagram Project in 2009 to bridge digital divide between the rural and urban areas.
