Haryana continued to post “dismal” growth in tax revenue mobilisation in the wake of slowdown in industrial segment as state’s Value Added Tax (VAT) collections rose by 7.74 per cent for April till September period.

“The collection of VAT up to September 2013 is Rs 7,635.85 crore which is 7.74 per cent more as compared to that of the corresponding period last year,” an official spokesman said here on Wednesday. Till the month of August, the VAT collections of the state grew by 6.13 per cent.

State excise officials had attributed the single digit growth in VAT collections to the slowdown in potential sectors, including automobile. Haryana is a major hub of automobile sector across the country.

Moreover, lower arrival of wheat during last rabi marketing season also had a bearing on VAT collections from wheat this fiscal.

Notably, Haryana has projected a growth of 17.26 per cent in VAT growth with mobilisations at Rs 19,288 crore for 2013-14 fiscal.

The state’s total tax revenue for the period April till September was Rs 10,755.62 crore which is 9.12 per cent higher as compared to the corresponding period of last fiscal.

Collections from excise were Rs 1,975.25 crore up to the month of September 2013 which was 15.25 per cent higher as compared to the same period of year 2012-13, spokesman said.

The Department recorded an increase of 26.60 per cent in collection from entertainment tax up to September 2013 during the current financial year by collecting more than Rs 33.81 crore as compared to the collection of over Rs 26.71 crore during the same period of the year 2012-13.

The Passenger and Goods Tax collection was Rs 235.28 crore during same period, which was 8.02 per cent high as compared to that of the corresponding period of last financial year, the spokesman said.

A sum of over Rs 30.30 crore was collected as luxury tax which was 26.33 per cent higher as compared to that of the corresponding period of last year as more than Rs 23.99 crore were collected in year 2012-13.
