Heavy rain impacts normal life in Kolkata, parts of Bengal

Normal life was thrown out of gear due to heavy rain in Kolkata and other parts of Bengal since Friday night. Most parts of the city were flooded, with traffic disruptions across major thoroughfares. While no flights were cancelled , train services were affected due to heavy water logging.

According to the G. C. Debnath, Director, Regional Meteorological Department, Alipore, most South Bengal districts and Kolkata received heavy rain. Contai and Durgapur received more than 100 mm , while rainfall at Diamond Harbour and Kolkata was 200 mm and 110 mm, respectively.

A spokesperson for the Eastern Railway said the Kolkata-Gorakhpur Purbanchal Express has been rescheduled due to water logging in Circular Railway, and Circular Railway services have been suspended temporarily. Besides, Gangasagar Express has also been delayed by an hour . Train services in the Howrah and Sealdah divisions have also been impacted.

Meanwhile, Kolkata Police had to stop small vehicular movement across inundated thoroughfares of North Kolkata. The Met Department has forecast heavy showers across parts of Kolkata, Howrah and South 24 Parganas over the next 24 hours.

According to Kolkata Police, Ashish Mondal and his son Sanjoy Mondal, died after a balcony of an old house collapsed near Burabazar area.
