High Court gives Hardik bail after nine months in prison

After being granted bail by the Gujarat High Court in a case of sedition last week, Patidar pro-reservation leader Hardik Patel was on Monday given bail by the court in the Visnagar rioting case, allowing him to come out of jail after nine months.

The 22-year old Patidar youth in the Visnagar rioting case, on the condition that he will not enter Mehsana for nine months.

Patel was accused for vandaliing an MLA’s office in Visnagar, a town in Mehsana district, during pro-reservation demonstrations last year. Last week, the High Court had granted him bail in two sedition cases slapped by the State Government, on the condition that he would have to stay out of Gujarat for six months.

However, the court further allowed Patel to appeal against its decision, barring him from entering Mehsana only after completion of its earlier six-month ban order in the sedition case.

Patel is likely to be released from a Surat jail, where he has been imprisoned. However, he will have to leave Gujarat within 48 hours of his release.
