Nuclear energy is a near-renewable energy source because it is produced by breeder reactors and the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) at Kalpakkam plays a vital role in it. “IGCAR is a pride of the country,” said R Chidambaram, DAE- Homi Bhabha Chair Professor and Former Principal Scientific Advisor, Government of India. Kalpakkam’s uniqueness is in having reactors fuelled by all the three fissile isotopes — Uranium 235 (MAPS), Plutonium 239 (FBTR) and Uranium 233 (KAMINI), he said in a speech on the occasion of Foundation Day of IGCAR.
