Chennai will get its second desalination plant, an additional source of drinking water obtained from processing seawater, tomorrow when the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa inaugurates the plant in Nemili to the South of Chennai.
The Rs 1,033-crore plant set up by >VA Tech Wabag for the utility Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Metrowater, will produce about 100 million litres of fresh water daily from sea water. The project at Nemili about 45 km south of Chennai on the East Coast Road has been funded by a grant from the Central Government.
The water is to be supplied by Metrowater to the southern parts of the city. The plant will meet nearly one-sixth of the city’s drinking water needs.
