The apparel industry has hailed the government’s decision to exempt loose garments from the provisions of Packaged Commodity Act. Terming the decision as a game changer, Rahul Mehta, President of the Clothing Manufacturers Association, said that this would go a long way in ease of doing business as also provide freedom from undue demands of inspectors and their inspector raj. “It is a progressive step “ he added. Industry sources point out that there were no clear labelling guidelines for loose garments as per the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Act, which made it difficult for apparel retailers to demarcate the labelling procedure between pre-packaged and loose garments.
