Members of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore (ICCIC), met the Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu in New Delhi to impress upon him the need for strengthening railway infrastructure amenities at Coimbatore junction.
ICCIC President D Nandakumar in a representation appealed for upgrading Peelamedu Railway Station as a model station without further delay. “Though several passenger amenities are sanctioned and in process, the progress of work is not up to expectation at Peelamedu Railway Station. If the developmental works are completed, it would not only serve as a model station but help reduce congestion at Coimbatore junction as also serve the people of eastern side effectively,” he said urging the need to hasten the work.
The Chamber also highlighted the need for initiating steps for the speedy completion of the Podanur-Pollachi Broad Gauge line.
Yet another long-pending request was an exclusive overnight train linking Bengaluru and Coimbatore.
Notwithstanding such a request on the amenities side, the ICCIC President, during the discussion, did not fail to point out the importance of Coimbatore as a potential raw material procurement hub for the Railways.
“The region’s MSMEs’ contribution to the manufacturing sector is nearly equal to that of the public and private sector owned large industries,” he said, highlighting the potential.
