The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday alleged that inspector and licence raj had returned in the form of environmental clearances under the United Progressive Alliance regime.
The party said the “crisis” was persisting as the Government was pulling in different directions on the issue of environmental clearances.
Addressing the media, BJP spokesperson and MP Prakash Javadekar said though the Government had formed a National Investment Board for speedy clearance of mega infrastructure projects, environmental clearance remained a major roadblock on the ground. He said despite assurances from both the Prime Minister’s Office and the Environment Ministry, the industry was facing a new “environment licence raj”.
Javadekar said the UPA Government was not interested in faster development of the country, and added that there was a need for unanimity on the issue between various organs of the Government to resist international pressure, which could impact the cost competitiveness of Indian exports.
He said BJP’s concern was not on a particular project, but the general delay in clearing industrial projects.
“The Prime Minister goes ahead with the formation of the committee and the Environment Ministry becomes a roadblock. It doesn’t grant clearances in time,” he added.
