Institution of Engineers to set up database of jobless grads

The Kerala State Centre of Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI) will create a database of unemployed engineers and of those who have completed the course but with a backlog of uncleared papers.

This is only a beginning of a massive drive that attempts to improve the skillsets of students in their technology areas and ascertain their employability, the IEI said.

The IEI will seek to make an overall assessment of what it described as ‘a worrisome situation’ on hand and make suitable recommendations to the state government on how to deal with it.

Only 14 per cent of the enrolled students manage to complete the course on time, said KS Udayakumar, Honorary Secretary, and N Rajkumar, Chairman, of the Kerala State Centre of the IEI.

There are 162 engineering colleges in the state with a total capacity of 62,700 seats.

Udayakumar and Rajkumar said that even for those who have passed all papers, there is a dire need to improve skillsets to survive the tough competition.
