IOC trying to address LPG shortage in Kerala

Indian Oil Corporation is making all-out efforts for alternative LPG supplies in affected areas due to labour unrest at its Chelari Plant in Kozhikode, a press release from the company said.

As labour problems intensified at its Indane LPG bottling plant at Chelari, the company is trying to supply LPG cylinders in the affected areas of Malappuram and Thrissur districts from other plants.

Even though IndianOil had awarded the contracts for handling as well as loading/unloading of cylinders at the plant in January and February respectively through public tenders, the issue of wage settlement between the contractors and the labourers working under them could not be resolved amicably, resulting in frequent disruptions in operating the Chelari plant, the release added.

Several attempts at conciliation between the parties by the Assistant Labour Commissioner (Central) and the District Collector of Malappuram failed to resolve the issue.

The contractor has taken the matter to the High Court, which has given interim directions to the Superintendent of Police and the Assistant Labour Commissioner to ensure that the plant functions smoothly.

However, the contract labourers have chosen to disrupt working of the LPG plant at Chelari, leading to backlogs.
