The national council and executive meeting of the Janata Dal (United) began here on Saturday with the party reiterating its political opposition to Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP leader Narendra Modi.

The two-day meeting will review its presence in the National Democratic Alliance amid rumours that it would walk out of the alliance if the Bharatiya Janata Party projects Modi as NDA’s prime ministerial candidate.

Maintaining that the JD(U) has “impeccable secular credentials”, senior party leader and spokesperson K. C. Tyagi said it would not put pressure on the BJP over its choice of prime minister candidate. He, however, said that Modi, as Chief Minister, had failed to control the 2002 riots.

Asked if such a person can be a successful Prime Minister, Tyagi said Modi and the BJP had to take a decision on this. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and JD(U) President Sharad Yadav will address the gathering on Sunday. Tyagi said Nitish Kumar was not in the race for the Prime Minister’s seat. “He is not a contender for the post,” he added.

The party’s political resolution, which will be passed on Sunday, is likely to include discussions on the question of NDA’s leadership, alliances with the BJP in other States, current political developments and the future role of the JD(U).
