The BJP in Karnataka has come out in support of Kambala (slushtrack buffallo race) of coastal Karnataka.
Addressing presspersons in Mangaluru on Monday, B.S. Yeddiyurappa, President of the Karnataka BJP, said Kambala is a traditional folk sport of coastal Karnataka.
(Organising Kambala has been stayed by the court following a petition by animal activists in this regard. The Kambala organising committees in coastal Karnataka have filed an interim application seeking the vacation of the stay. The high court is scheduled to hear the case on January 30.)
Hoping to get a favourable judgement from the High Court, Yeddiyurappa said the executive committee of the party, which met in Kalaburagi last week, has taken a decision to support Kambala.
The Law and Justice Minister, Ravishankar Prasad, will be informed about the importance of Kambala in the culture of coastal Karnataka, he said.
On the drought conditions in Karnataka, he said the party's executive committee has asked its elected representatives to use the amount from their respective local area development funds for handling drought in their respective constituencies. The state government should make use of the amount sanctioned by the Centre for handling drought, he added.
