In Kerala, the results have been along predicted lines but are still notable in terms of implications for at least three main contenders.

Firstly, the State has defied the Modi wave and continued to deny the BJP an opportunity to open its account. This despite party veteran O Rajagopal nearly pulling it off against the Congress’ Shashi Tharoor, sitting member and Union Minister of State for HRD. Tharoor could break into lead only in the last few rounds before prevailing by a margin of 13,000-odd votes. This was the closest ever that the BJP came to tilting the scales in its favour in the State.

Congress-led United Democratic Front has won a tally of 12-8 against main opposition Left Democratic Front.

None of the Union ministers from the State, unlike their peers elsewhere, has had to eat the humble pie though a few had to wait until the last rounds to make it to the winners’ list. As for the Left, it was hoping to make some gains. Now that this hope has been belied, what lies in store for the Front is anybody’s guess.
