Vinson Kurian Kerala’s sleuths will strengthen their crime fighting ability with AI-based drones capable of facial recognition and identification to catch the most wanted.

Cyberdome, the R&D centre of the Kerala Police based here, has adopted the latest cyber threat intelligence tools and techniques to extend the ability of the police to unravel crimes.

It will roll out its most compelling proposition yet — drones for facial recognition and identification using artificial intelligence (AI) — at the 11th Cocon, an international conference on cyber security, data privacy and hacking, scheduled in Kochi in October. These drones will feature in the ‘most absorbing live demo’ at the event, an official spokesman for the organisers told

At the event, a custom-built drone will take off from its pedestal. Its camera feed will be automatically projected on screens. The drone will do a sortie in which it will mop up the facial details of everyone present in the hall and identify a few key people. The recognised people’s name, emails and passwords and some ‘intimately private info’ will be displayed on the screens. The data is confirmed with the individuals concerned!

How is this possible? Well, the AI component of the system mined 10 years of Cocon data to build a face recognition software. Another database is used to match the faces with individual emails.

The matched emails are referred to the ‘big data leak server’ (a historical record of all third-party data leaks) to reveal the users’ old/current password/personal info.

The Kerala Police proposes to formally adopt the system, which, the spokesman said, will come in handy for VIP security, near airports and highly protected zones. It can also be used at traffic junctions to identify wanted persons. These drones can be deployed even beyond line-of-sight to monitor various locations. The spokesman said, the Kerala Police would be the very first in the country to operate such drones in law enforcement.
