Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, in a letter to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, expressed concern over the drastic cut in kerosene allocation to the State.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has allocated 29,060 kl of kerosene for the April-June 2013 quarter for the Public Distribution System (PDS), which is less than half the requirement of 65,140 kl. She requested the Prime Minister to intervene and ensure Tamil Nadu’s requirement is fully met.

The reduction hits the poor who are dependent on the PDS for fuel.

Tamil Nadu’s allocation has gone down steadily in the last two years. It was 52,806 kl per month in April-June, 2011; 44,576 kl in the January-March, 2012; 42,460 kl in the April-June 2012 quarter; and 39,429 kl per month from the July-September, 2012 quarter onwards.

“Tamil Nadu has been singled out for such a drastic reduction. The allotment of kerosene to most other States has been maintained at former levels with virtually no reduction,” the Chief Minister said in the letter.

The process of kerosene allotment was “totally opaque and arbitrary,” she said.
