Congress Legislature Party leader Lal Thanhawla who led the party to a landslide win in the Mizoram Assembly elections, today formally staked claim to form the next government in the state.
Thanhawla in a letter to Governor Vakkom B. Purushothaman staked claim to form the government, Press Secretary L.R. Sailo said.
Earlier, the Chief Minister met the Governor on December 9 after the results of the elections were announced, he said.
Thanhawla was unanimously elected as the CLP leader yesterday.
The Congress, which has been ruling the state since the latter part of 2008, retained power by winning 34 of the 40 seats in the Assembly elections held on November 24.
