Traffic across different parts of the city is likely to come to a standstill today afternoon onwards following a rally call by the Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The rally has been called to protest the “political vendetta of the Centre against the State Government”.
The rally will start at 3 pm from the College Street area in North Kolkata and end at Dorina Crossing near Esplanade in Central Kolkata. It is expected to cover a distance of approximately five km.
According to the Trinamool Congress website, party workers will be holding placards that say: “Political conspiracies have made us thieves. Arrest all of us.”
Banerjee upped the ante — in her criticism of the Centre — from November 22 following the arrest of Srinjoy Bose (whom she calls by his nickname Tumpai) by the CBI in relation to the Saradha scam. Srinjoy, a Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP, is also the editor of the party’s mouth Jago Bangla and Bengali daily Sangbad Pratidin .
She had since then vowed to take to the streets to protest against the Centre’s “atrocities” and attempts to sabotage her party’s image.
“We will not stop at protesting against the atrocities. We do not fear going to jail,” the Chief Minister had then said.
Eminent intellectuals, besides the party leaders, will be present at this protest march.
Banerjee will attend the rally after holding an administrative review meeting with the district officials of North 24 Parganas today.
