The Mangalore Central Excise Commissionerate is likely to collect a central excise duty of Rs 3,200 crore by March.

A press release by M.V.S. Choudary, Commissioner of Central Excise, Mangalore, said here that the commissionerate is likely to achieve service tax collection of Rs 450 crore. This is 20.45 per cent more than that made during 2011-12.

The major commodities yielding central excise duty are petroleum products, ores and iron and steel products and cement. The major revenue yielding services are banking and financial services, port services, and storage and warehousing service.

The top three contributors for central excise revenue in Mangalore Commissionerate are ONGC-MRPL, KIOCL Ltd and Campco Ltd. The top three contributors for service tax revenue are Corporation Bank, Syndicate Bank and New Mangalore Port Trust.

The officers of preventive and special intelligence and investigation team unearthed evasion of central excise duty and service tax of Rs 46.84 crore in 56 cases up to January in 2012-13 fiscal. Out of this, Rs 9.69 crore has been recovered, Choudary said.

The modus operandi adopted by the tax evaders included collection of service tax from their clients but not declaring and paying to the department; and rendering of taxable service without obtaining registration of service tax.

He requested the public to furnish credible information on central excise duty or service tax evaders. The identity of such informers will be kept confidential and they will be rewarded. In one such case, the informer was awarded with a reward of Rs 60 lakh during the current financial year, he added.
