Mangalore City Corporation has decided to ban the use of plastics in the city.
Addressing presspersons here, Channappa Gowda, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, said that the ban will be imposed from December 1. Plastic waste constitutes nearly 60-70 per cent of solid waste collected in the city.
Stating that there is no need for a separate notification on plastic ban in the city, he said there are provisions under the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act. Those who violate the ban will have to pay a penalty of Rs 100, he said.
The Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation, Harish Kumar, said that the corporation would initiate the door-to-door waste collection drive in the city. To begin with, segregated waste will be collected from two wards in the corporation limits on a pilot basis.
Meanwhile, non-segregated waste would be collected from other wards. With this, the corporation would remove waste collection bins from the city in a phased manner, he added.
