The Member of Parliament (MP) from Dakshina Kannada has urged the Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) to prepare a plan to provide solar power in remote villages in the district.
Chairing the meeting of the district committee for Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS) and Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gram Jyothi Yojana (DDUGJY) in Mangaluru on Saturday, Nalin Kumar Kateel, Dakshina Kannada MP, asked Mescom to come out with plans to provide solar power in remote villages such as Banjarumale, Elaneer and Maligemane in the district.
Drawing power lines to these villages through conventional mode is difficult as the lines will have to pass through the forest.
He said that Mescom should take initiatives to install solar power units at government offices in the district. He suggested that the offices of the Deputy Commissioner of the district and of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat be considered for solar lighting in the first phase.
UBS Sukumar, Superintending Engineer (Mangalore Circle) of Mescom, informed the meeting that the company has submitted detailed project reports (DPRs) to the Union Ministry of Power for the implementation of works under IPDS and DDUGJY.
