Guided missile frigate INS Betwa suffered a major accident at the Naval Dockyard at Mumbai. Two sailors have succumbed to injuries and 14 sailors were rescued.
“At about 1.50 pm, INS Betwa , a frigate of the Indian Navy, was in the process of undocking in Naval Dockyard in Mumbai, when she slipped from the dock blocks and tilted. Immediate action was taken to get all personnel to safety," said Commander Rahul Sinha, Defence spokesperson. He went on to add that technical evaluation was on for making the ship upright, and that an inquiry into the incident has been ordered.
The Brahmaputra-class frigate was on a refit at the dock. It was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 2004 and has participated in several exercises. INS Betwa is an indigenous 3,850-tonne ship armed with anti-ship missiles, surface-to-air missiles and torpedoes.
In January 2014, the same ship had run aground and collided with an unidentified object while approaching the Mumbai naval base.
