State-owned North Eastern Electrical Power Corporation (NEEPCO) today said it is keen on jointly developing power projects in the north eastern region with private power developers who has undertaken the projects but yet to make any headway till date.

“We have invited them (power developers) through expression of interests for jointly developing the projects undertaken by them,” NEEPCO Chairman P C Pankaj said.

He was addressing a regional conference — Empowering NE: Overcoming challenges in development of power sector in NE India here.

Arunachal Pradesh has signed more than 108 pacts with private power developers, while Meghalaya had signed nine in 2007, most of which are hydel-based and has not made any headway.

With an potential capacity of more than 59,000 MW, the region at present generates only 1,200 MW of which, Pankaj said, the generation is nothing as it is too less.

“They (power developers) are not doing anything with the projects after singing MoUs and there may be some problems with them. It could be technical problem or other problems including financial problems for which our experiences matter to take the projects ahead,” Pankaj said.

“We have lot of experiences in this field and so we can handle the process in a better way so that the project can be developed,” he said.

The NEEPCO chief said certain companies having projects in Arunachal Pradesh have responded to the Expression of Interest put out in public domain.

Pankaj said the EoI would be extended for another two weeks as the company aims at finalising the project within three months.
