Neyveli Lignite Corporation workers’ strike continued for the second day today hitting mining operations while power generation was maintained with the available stock of lignite.

The workers are on an indefinite strike protesting the Union Government’s plan to divest 5 five per cent stake in the Central Public Sector Enterprise.

According to union sources, over 20,000 workers are on strike. They plan to organise a demonstration on Saturday. Over 20 unions have come together on the issue. They will decide on ways to intensify the agitation to press their demand.

They also appealed to the 5,000 engineers and executives who have expressed support for their cause but not participated in the strike.

Union representatives said mining operations have been entirely affected by the strike. The power generation of about 2200 MW will drop as lignite stocks come down with no mining to replenish the stocks, they said.
