A record 2,710 new coronavirus positive cases were reported in Tamil Nadu in the last 24 hours taking the total cases to 62,087. However, with 1,358 patients treated and discharged, the number of persons under treatment is 27,178.
Chennai alone reported 1,487 new cases. Madurai saw a spike with 153; Chengalpattu 126; Tiruvallur 120; Tiruvannamalai 130 and the balance distributed across other districts, including Kancheepuram.
After the death of 37 patients, the number of fatalities due to the virus increased to 794.
On Monday, 26,592 samples were tested.
Lockdown in Madurai
Meanwhile, following a spike in the number of cases in Madurai, the State government has announced a 7-day complete lockdown in the Corporation jurisdiction and some areas in the district from June 24 to 30.
This follows the extensive lockdown announced from June 19 to 30 in Chennai, and its three neighbouring districts of Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengapattu due to surge in the number of infections.
