The Tamil Nadu government has announced an interim relief of ₹15 crore for fishermen affected by oil spill caused by a collision between two ships at Ennore Kamarajar port in January.
In the collision between Maple and Dawn Kanchipuram, oil spiltfrom the latter affected the beaches of North Chennai. Fishermen from districts of Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur claimed that their livelihood was hampered by the oil spill.
Chief Minister K Palaniswami announced the interim relief after a high-level meeting at Secretariat on Thursday.
He announced a sum of ₹5,000 each to nearly 30,000 fishermen families affected by the oil spill in the three districts.
Two fish markets will be set up at Ernavur and Nochikuppam at a cost of ₹75 lakhs, he said.
