Opposition parties are using a tweet by Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat to protest the increase in the prices of petrol and diesel and demand a rollback.
Modi had said in the tweet three years ago, when he was the chief minister of Gujarat, that the UPA government’s decision to increase the price of petrol would have an impact on Gujarat.
Modi had termed the hike “massive” in the 2012 tweet. “He termed a ₹1.5 increase per litre as massive. Then what should we call it when petrol prices are raised by ₹3.96 per litre and diesel by ₹2.37 a litre? Humongous?” asked Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi.
The Left parties have also condemned the price hike. The CPI (M) said the move would lead to an inflationary spiral, imposing a huge burden on working people.
The party called for protests against the Centre’s decision.
