Electoral authorities have seized over Rs 48 lakh in the bypoll-bound Srirangam constituency, the Election Commission today said.
“During inspection by various squads, 17,250 vehicles have been checked and a sum of Rs 48,76,500 seized so far,” a release from the office of Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer, Sandeep Saxena, said.
In addition to the flying squads, 12 additional squads have been pressed into service to further enforce the model code of conduct and authorities have also removed 837 defacements, it said.
Srirangam is witnessing a four-cornered battle for the keenly fought assembly bypoll on February 13 after AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa vacated the seat following her conviction and disqualification in an assets case by a Bengaluru special court.
AIADMK, DMK, BJP and CPI(M) are testing their electoral fortunes a year ahead of the scheduled elections to Tamil Nadu Assembly.
