The total earnings of the Palakkad division of Southern Railway stood at ₹374.86 crore in the first four months of 2015-16, according to Anand Prakash, Divisional Railway Manager of Palakkad Division.
Of the total earnings, passenger traffic contributed a major share of ₹207.57 crore. This was followed by earnings from goods traffic at ₹145.68 crore.
The other coaching earnings and sundry earnings stood at ₹12.58 crore and ₹9.03 crore, respectively, during April-July 2015-16.
A press release highlighting the performance of the division said that the Palakkad division carried 2.56 crore of passengers and transported 2.49 million tonnes of goods during the period.
The division has already taken up passenger amenity projects worth ₹37.51 crore. Additional projects worth ₹29.39 crore will be commenced during 2015-16.
Track doubling Quoting Anand Prakash, it said that a crucial bottleneck at the interchanging point with Konkan Railway in Mangaluru will be removed after the track doubling of 19-km-long Mangalore Junction - Panambur section. Of this, work on the six km stretch will be completed by March 2016.
Work on the electrification of track between Kannur and Mangaluru is progressing rapidly, it said, adding that electrification between Kozhikode and Kannur is expected to be completed by December.
The installation of two lifts and two escalators at Mangaluru Central railway station is in progress, the release added.
