After visiting Kochi 16 years after his mother Queen Elizabeth II did, Prince Charles wound up his nine-day India tour on Thursday and left here for Colombo to address the CHOGM meeting as a stand-in for the British monarch, who is the titular head of Commonwealth.

On Thursday, the prince and his wife Camilla visited the 16th century Paradesi Synagogue at Mattancherry, a must-see for all visiting dignitaries, as well as the Portuguese-built Dutch Palace (also called Mattancherry Palace) before heading for the airport in the afternoon.

Earlier in the day, the prince celebrated his 65th birthday with his wife at Kumarakom in Kottayam district. The royals had arrived at the backwater resort on Tuesday evening and spent Wednesday free of any official engagements. On Wednesday, they went boat-riding in Vembanad lake.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who called on him to greet him on his birthday on Thursday morning, presented him with an image of elephant carved in wood as a birthday gift from the people of Kerala.

Charles and Camilla, who arrived in Kochi on Monday, had a few pre-arranged visits in the city and its suburbs, apart from an official reception hosted by the Kerala government on Monday evening. Camilla had a few social visits of her own.
