The Palakkad division of Southern Railways has seen a growth of 18.13 per cent in the sales of tickets in the first nine months of 2014-15.
The division sold tickets amounting to ₹485.36 crore from April-December of 2014-15 as against ₹410.85 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.
The Palakkad division attributed this growth to the intensification of ticket-checking drive during the period. The ticket-checking earnings increased to ₹4.06 crore in the first three quarters of 2014-15 as against ₹2.93 crore in the corresponding period of 2013-14.
Ticket-checking earnings refers to the earnings collected from the offenders involved in travelling without tickets, littering, smoking and other illegal activities during train travel or at railway stations.
A press release by the division said here on Saturday that the division has conducted ticket checking through methods such as ambush checks (surprise checks on trains), fortress checks (station-based checks covering all the entry and exit points), and cross-country checks (checks on trains and station on random basis).
