Supporting the VHP’s recently accelerated efforts to construct a Ram temple in Ayodhya, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He has sought the speeding up of proceedings in the various civil appeals against the Allahabad High Court decision on the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid issue.

Swamy, presenting his credentials at a press meet here on Tuesday as a former Law Minister who negotiated with the Babri Masjid Action Committee, offered his services to negotiate with other political parties as well as assist the law officers of the government in this regard.

The Centre should urge the Supreme Court to ensure that day-to-day hearings are held in different civil appeals against the Allahabad High Court order to the purpose of an expeditious final decision on the matter, he told the PM.

“Consequently, the Narasimha Rao government in which I also held a Cabinet rank position had given an affidavit to the Constitution bench of the Supreme Court that if there ever was a pre-existing temple where Babri Masjid stood, the government will be in favour of handing over the Ram Janmabhoomi to the Hindus to build the Ram temple.

“Now it has been established by the ASI that indeed there was such a temple. The matter is now pending with the Supreme Court,” Swamy told Modi.

Day-to-day hearings

He said the Muslims too are in favour of an expeditious decision on the matter and the Centre should appeal to the Supreme Court that all the civil appeals in the matter be dealt with on a day-to-day basis.

“…These appeals are against the judgement of the three-judge Bench of the Allahabad High Court in which Ram Lala was recognised as the owner of the disputed area in the central dome. In view of Mr (Asaduddin) Owaisi’s assurance, I feel that it is appropriate that our government, especially its law officers, approach the Supreme Court with an application seeking day-to-day hearing in the Ram Janmabhoomi issues and pray that the Supreme Court gives its ruling on the civil appeals as early as possible,” he told the PM.
