The AIADMK has authorised its Governing Council to decide on a party candidate for RK Nagar Assembly by-election to be held on December 21. This was decided at a meeting held on Monday at the party’s headquarters here which was attended by office-bearers, MLAs and MPs. A statement issued by party coordinator and State Deputy Chief Minister O Paneerselvam said the meeting deliberated on issues related to the observance of the first death anniversary of former chief minister J Jayalalithaaa, who died on December 5, 2016.
The by-poll, which was necessitated due to Jayalalithaa’s death, was earlier planned on April 12. However, Election Commission cancelled it due to allegations of widespread cash distribution to voters by various parties.
The AIAMDK release said the GC had been expanded with inclusion of KP Munusamy, R Vaithiyalingam and P Valarmathi.
Meanwhile, the DMK, which renominated Marudhu Ganesh as candidate for by-election, has got the backing of Congress, Viduthalai Chiruttai Katchi and All India Forward Bloc.
The BJP is yet to take a decision on fielding its candidate.
