The Prime Minister Narendra Modi today scored a political point over West Bengal, Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee.
Banerjee who was present at the launch of the Jan Suraksha schemes, had said that nearly a third of the gram panchayat areas in Bengal were outside the purview of formal banking operations. It was for the Centre to ensure that formal banking services reach to all these areas.
"In two years since the Trinamool Congress came to power in Bengal we set up banks in 171 of these areas that were not catered to by the banks. The banks and the Centre must ensure that there are banking operations at all the Gram Panchayat level," she urged.
But this was a chance enough for Modi to claim that Banerjee drew his attention because she had faith on his abilities.
"The fact that she has asked me to ensure delivery of banking services in remote rural areas, means that she knows I am capable of doing so," Modi said.
