Rural students need not in any way feel inferior to their urban counterparts in obtaining jobs in the software sector or other sectors, as knowledge in core subjects is the main criterion for recruiters, according to BVR Mohan Reddy, Chairman of the National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom).

He was speaking here at the Pithapuram Rajah Government College ninth graduation day celebrations. He is an old student of the college.

He said rural students were as good as the urban ones in knowledge, but many of them were found wanting in communication and soft skills.

“However, it is not a big issue. A six-week-long course is enough to get them trained in these skills and most companies are willing to recruit rural students and impart them training in soft skills. There is, therefore, no need for rural students to suffer any inhibitions,” he said.

He said that job opportunities were growing in the software sector in spite of many vicissitudes. Reddy said the dearth of qualified faculty was the major challenge faced by educational institutions now. “The institutes can take the help of technology to support its faculty. They should keep in mind that technology cannot replace teachers, but it can certainly supplement them,” he said.

Encourage start-ups

Referring to the division of the State, Reddyfelt that the government of Andhra Pradesh must focus on education and infrastructure sectors to attract investors. “There is an immediate need to encourage start-ups. The students must be given guidance on becoming entrepreneurs,” he said.
