Samsung, Spice, IESA to set up plants in Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh appears to be gaining traction as the next big investment destination for technology companies.

On Tuesday, three entities announced growth plans in the State — Samsung, Spice Group and the India Electronics & Semiconductor Association (IESA).

Samsung India announced plans to expand their manufacturing plant in Noida with investments of ₹517 crore under the UP Mega Policy.

The company said the new Samsung Z1, which runs on the Tizen OS, will be manufactured at this plant. Samsung added that most of the phone’s software will be developed at the Noida Research Centre.

“In order to adhere to and meet Global Quality Standards, an online monitoring system has been put in place to monitor the processes on a real-time basis. Samsung India Electronics has invested in a modern training facility spread over 35,000 square feet within its manufacturing premises to focus on capability building and skill enhancement of its employees,” the company said in a statement.

Expansion plans

Meanwhile, the Spice Group, also announced an investment of ₹500 crore to set up a manufacturing unit in the State.

“The manufacturing unit will bolster the company’s strategy to introduce affordable mobile internet devices in India through domestic manufacturing, thus catering to a larger market by offering best technology at most affordable prices,” the company said.

Spice, which manufactures affordable feature as well as smartphones targeted at Tier II and III cities, is set to take advantage of incentives under various schemes as part of the memorandum of understanding signed with the State, the company said.

IESA, the trade body representing the Indian electronic system design and manufacturing (ESDM) industry, has also signed an MoU with the State“for promoting an ESDM industry ecosystem”. IESA said it will help UP in setting up ESDM incubation centres; developing roadmap for the industry; preparing detailed project reports for brownfield/greenfield EMC; setting up international desks for the State in foreign locations and in talent and skill development.
