Sardar Sarovar Dam on Narmada River in South Gujarat reported heavy inflow of water from the upper catchment area, thereby leading to overflowing of the dam at 122 meters.

According to the Dam authorities, on Friday evening, the water was 121.23 meters as against the rule level of 121.92. “The water started overflowing the dam height at 3 am on Saturday morning . It was flowing at 122 meters at 6 am. Currently, water inflow is over 1.74 lakh cusecs as against the outflow of close to 67,997 cusecs,” a statement said.

Last time the dam had overflowed was in August 2014.

Notably, the dam, which is considered the lifeline for Gujarat, overflowed for the first time after installation of the gates , which was among the first decisions taken by the Narendra Modi administration after assuming office in May 2014.

The Gujarat tourism has floated special advertisements on social media to attract tourists from across the states to witness the 'White water' flowing from the Dam. Adequate security arrangements have been made to handle the rush of the tourists, the officials claimed.
