The State government has declared a holiday on Tuesday for all schools and colleges in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur Districts.
In the aftermath of the severe cyclonic storm Vardah, life was thrown out of kilter in the city and its suburbs. Severe rains are expected to continue through the night.
According to an official press release from the Greater Chennai Police, seven people died, 24 injured, 800 trees were uprooted and 1,500 people are in government relief centres.
Industry sources said production has been affected in industrial estates in the city and its suburbs. Large and small units had shut down for the day. Power supply was also down from morning and operations were not possible, sources said.
The situation was similar in most major industrial units. Automobile manufacturer Hyundai decided to shut down during the second and third shift. Major units in North Chennai were also shut for safety reasons. Ashok Leyland had shut its R&D facility to the North of Chennai.
