The Trinamool Congress-led West Bengal Government on Monday squarely blamed the erstwhile Left Front for the Singur fiasco and spared Tatas from the controversy.

According to State Commerce and Industries Minister Partha Chatterjee, the erstwhile Left Front Government’s decision to identify land in Singur for Tata Nano project was a “wrong’’ decision.

He was speaking on the sidelines of a seminar on balanced approach to the New Land Acquisition Act, 2013, by the MCC Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

The Minister, however, reiterated that the “unwilling farmers in Singur should get back their land.”

Meanwhile, Medha Patkar, social activist and National Convener, National Alliance of People’s Movements, said the Singur issue could have been resolved through “an out of court settlement.”

“People (land losers) in Singur are still waiting for their land to be given back. I know the matter is sub judice. But there could have been an outside court settlement,” she said.

According to her, an aid of Rs 2000 to farmers in Singur announced by the State Government is a temporary solution and land losers should take their movement forward.

“I think the struggle should continue to take back the land and all the political parties should (also) support the movement by people of Singur to take back land,” Patkar pointed out.
