Emerging Kerala Global Connect may have put out a list of mega project ideas that the State Government is pursuing already or hoping to do so.

Kerala State Industries Development Corporation, the nodal agency for foreign and domestic investments in the State, has listed 10 such prestigious projects.

SMALLER PROJECTS

The three-day Emerging Kerala event in Kochi beginning September 12 would also a reel out a large number of comparatively much smaller project proposals.

Among them is a Rs 15-crore smart card manufacturing and personalising project from the Kollam-based public sector undertaking, United Electrical Industries.

This project would address the demand for smart cards in the government sector for a variety of applications. They include driving license, certificate of registration (RC) book, ration card, banking cards and various identity cards.

Orders would be executed against specific orders from the Government and other agencies. This would assure a steady market for the product, the project proposal says.

DEMAND BASE

Since citizens of different categories are sought to be progressively identified through smart cards allotted to them, the demand base would stay strong.

The projected capacity is 10 lakh smart cards in a year; and the project would come up over six acres of land already available.

A smart card refers to any pocket-sized card with embedded integrated circuits and contains volatile memory and microprocessor components.

It made of plastic, generally polyvinyl chloride. Smart cards may also provide strong security authentication for single sign-on (SSO) in large organisations.

The benefits of smart cards are directly related to the volume of information and applications that are programmed for use on a card.

MULTIPLE CREDENTIALS

A single contact/contactless smart card can be programmed with multiple banking credentials, medical entitlement, driver’s license/public transporter entitlement, loyalty programmes or club memberships.

Multifactor and proximity authentication can and has been embedded into smart cards to increase the security of all services on the card.

Governments make significant gains in extending publicly funded services through increased security offered by smart cards.
