A vigilance court in Thrissur has ordered that an FIR be framed and a case registered against Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Electricity Minister Aryadan Muhammed who face bribery charges in the solar case.

This development comes in the context of the prime accused Saritha Nair continuing with her deposition for a second day before a single judge inquiring into the solar scam in Kochi.

"The law must apply equally to the Chief Minister, the Prime Minister and the common man, and those who have committed a crime must pay a price," sources quoted the vigilance court as saying.

"Extraordinary circumstances call for extraordinary interventions," the court said justifying its order delivered an hour ago.

The vigilance court ordered the proceedings in response to a petition moved by a public activist, who had invited its attention to the revelations made in the case by Saritha Nair.

The order assumes special significance given the fact that K Babu, Excise Minister, had resigned soon after inviting similar action from the same court in the bar bribery case only five days ago.
