Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday invoked God to save India from the BJP’s Gujarat model of development.

“Some people are spreading so much falsehood and stooping so low for the sake of power that we can only pray to save this country from falling into their hands,” she told a well-attended election meeting in this town which comes under the Patan Lok Sabha constituency in North Gujarat.

This was her second election speech in the State, the first being at Valsad earlier in the day. Challenging Narendra Modi’s claims about development in the State, she said many villages in Gujarat have no water, the State Government does not include those earning ₹11 per day under the BPL scheme, and the State has failed on various parameters.

“O’God, save the country from this Gujarat model of development.” In her 13-minute speech, Gandhi said some parties’ main agenda is to level baseless charges against the Congress.

“The BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate, for the sake of power, is creating an atmosphere of obsession. He has no respect for any institution. It makes us concerned how democracy could remain safe in such hands. The Chief Minister of this State makes tall claims that the Congress did nothing for the country.”

She questioned why the BJP could not eradicate corruption in the States it ruled and failed to set up a Lok Ayukta in Gujarat for 10 years.
